This pangi is embroidered by hand and is a one-off: there is only one of it. The cloth measures 147 × 73 cm. The name pangi comes from the French word pagne, meaning loincloth or wrap skirt. In Suriname and French Guiana the pangi is the traditional dress of the adult Maroon woman. The cloth is wrapped around the body as a skirt. The colourful pangi fabric is decorated with symbols, flowers and animal figures, added with a variety of embroidery techniques. Today young Maroon women also turn pangi fabric into dresses, blouses, shirts, shorts and trousers.
