A hand-embroidered pangi measuring 153 × 75 cm. Every embroidered piece is unique, and there is only one of this one. The name pangi comes from the French word pagne, meaning loincloth or wrap skirt. In Suriname and French Guiana the pangi is the traditional dress of the adult Maroon woman. The cloth is wrapped around the body as a skirt. The colourful pangi fabric is decorated with symbols, flowers and animal figures, added with a variety of embroidery techniques. In Maroon communities, someone who always wears the same clothes is teasingly called Akatusu naawan or Adhe'mitee. So an extra pangi in the wardrobe never hurts.
