Kawaai are ankle bands made of crocheted cotton and kawaai seeds, crafted by Maroons and Indigenous Trio people. All materials are natural. They are worn as body decoration for dancing: with every movement the seeds make a rattling sound. Both the Maroons and the Trio wear kawaai for traditional dances. In the Awassa, women show their beauty through the dance movements and men their strength and skill. Kawaai are also heard in the Songe, the Susa and other Maroon dances in Suriname and French Guiana. Available in children's and adult sizes.
