A piece of Tembe woodcarving in cedar, made by Maroons from eastern Suriname. It is carved by hand and one of a kind. Tembe is the Maroon art of carved, often coloured symbols in wood. The stylised motifs sometimes carry an erotic meaning. The art form is alive among the Pamaka and Okanisi along the Marowijne and Tapanahoni rivers in south-eastern Suriname. Until now this woodcarving was mostly sold in French Guiana. Afu-Mena wants to make it available in Suriname and the rest of the world too.
