This book covers the history and use of textiles in the culture of the Maroons in Suriname and the border region with French Guiana. The Maroon textile collection of the Tropenmuseum holds around 130 items, mainly from Ndyuka and Saamaka culture. The oldest cloths date from the late nineteenth century and come from the collections of the Colonial Museum in Haarlem and the ethnographic collection of Artis. Later additions were gathered through Laddy van Putten of the Surinaams Museum, by Thomas Polimé for the research behind this book, and by Alex van Stipriaan for the exhibition Kunst van Overleven. Together they show how Maroon textiles developed from around 1880 to 2010. The book is built like an inverted pyramid: from the broad, general picture to Maroon textiles and finally to the Tropenmuseum collection itself. In Dutch, paperback, 94 pages, illustrated. ISBN 9789460222467.
