Ketee Uwii is a mix of herbs, leaves and plants picked and prepared by women who live in the tropical rainforest. Names such as andoja, go i sa kong and wasidoekoe show how rich this tradition is. The Ketee Uwii steam bath has been a familiar part of Maroon women's personal care for centuries. It is a quiet moment for yourself, with the scent of the rainforest. The herbs are traditionally used for steam bathing, for a fresh feeling throughout the day.
Use and preparation
Put the herbs in a kettle and fill it about three quarters with water. Bring to the boil until you can smell the herbs, then turn off the heat. Pour the water into a pot and wait about 5 minutes. Sit calmly over the steam for as long as it feels comfortable; if it is too hot, stand up for a moment and try again after a few minutes. Stay seated until the water has cooled, then freshen up externally with the lukewarm herbal water and pat dry. Make sure the steam is never too hot.
