The leaves of the Siwiru plant (Costus scaber, also called spiral ginger) are gathered deep in the Amazon forest of southern Suriname by Indigenous residents of the village of Kwamalasamutu. The plant grows wild there. The leaves are picked by hand and carefully processed into an herbal tea with a fresh, lightly spicy taste. Siwiru has been drunk for generations by the Indigenous peoples of the Surinamese rainforest. Traditionally it is enjoyed during the day, with a spoonful of honey.
Use and preparation
Steep the leaves well in a cup or pot of boiled water. Traditionally 2 cups are taken during the day, with a spoonful of honey. Pairs well with Pijana Oroi in the evening.
