Kwasi Bita is the wood of Quassia amara, a shrub from the Surinamese rainforest. The plant is named after Kwasi, an eighteenth-century Surinamese herbal expert. The wood has a strong bitter taste, which comes naturally from the compounds quassin and neoquassin. For the Maroons bita (bitter) has been a familiar part of daily life for generations. A piece of wood in a mug of warm water is simply part of the day in many families, and bita also has a fixed place in traditions around childbirth.
Use and preparation
Steep a piece of wood in warm water for 5 to 10 minutes and drink as a tea. Do not use during pregnancy or for long periods. If in doubt, consult your doctor.
