The leaves of the Pijana Oroi vine (Uncaria guianensis, also known as cat's claw) are gathered deep in the Amazon rainforest of southern Suriname by Indigenous residents of the village of Kwamalasamutu. The vine grows wild there. The leaves are picked by hand and carefully processed into a mild herbal tea. Pijana Oroi has been drunk for generations by the Indigenous peoples of the Surinamese rainforest. Traditionally it is enjoyed as an evening cup, with a spoonful of honey.
Use and preparation
Steep the leaves well in a cup or pot of boiled water. Traditionally 1 cup is taken in the evening, with a spoonful of honey. Pairs well with Siwiru during the day.
