The Saamaka Maroons make this oil from the pulp of the amana (Astrocaryum aculeatum, also called tucumã), a large type of awara palm fruit. Unlike maripa or coconut oil, amana oil does not set and stays liquid. In the kitchen it is good for cooking and baking. Its orange-yellow colour comes from the beta-carotene naturally present in the fruit. Maroon women also use amana oil in hair care. Mixed with a little water, it makes curly and coily hair easier to comb through. Amana oil is also used in cosmetics around the world.
Use and preparation
For cooking and baking. For hair: mix a little oil with water, then comb the hair through.
