Molasses comes from sugar cane. The cane is crushed and boiled, which gives cane syrup. After a second boiling you get molasses, and after the third the dark, intense blackstrap molasses. The taste is deep, slightly bitter and less sweet than ordinary syrup. Molasses naturally contains minerals from the sugar cane, such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron. For the Maroons molasses has a fixed place around the birth of a child. It is part of the traditional care of a newborn, which is why it is also included in our Meke Pikin package.
